The instrument is given a visual assessment of pads, playing order and general condition. Minor adjustments are done to the linked keywork to achieve the best playing response. External oiling of the rod ends and join is done. The instrument is usually dismantled for access only and rarely is full dismantling carried out.
Service
Recommended every 12 months but this depends on use. The instrument is completely dismantled of keywork and cleaned of grease and dust deposits. Removal of tarnish by polishing (if feasible) is charged at £15 and is done on request. Pads are checked and reseated/ replaced if necessary. Tenon corks, felts, regulation corks, and springs are checked and repaired/replaced if necessary. Minor realignment of bent keys is done. Rods and screws are cleaned and oiled. The keywork is reassembled and adjusted to playing order (regulated) then play-tested.
Overhaul
Normally carried out on instruments which are showing excessive signs of wear and tear. A visual assessment of the instrument is done prior to overhaul as sometimes it is not economically viable or physically possible to repair such instruments. Overhaul consists of: Dismantling of keywork; major/complete repad; replacement of tenon and regulation corks; removal of tarnish by polishing (if feasible); major/complete spring replacement; repairing of cracks in wood, and other components damaged by impact, e.g. snapped or distorted tenons and bent/broken keys; removing play from key rod ends; cleaning and oiling rods and screws; reassembling instrument and adjusting to playing order; play test.
Repairs not included in the above schedule are charged additionally
